A Christmas apology, and the seeds of hope

Opinion by Rachel Held Evans, Special to CNN

(CNN) - This week we celebrate Christmas, and as a Christian, I want to say I’m sorry.

I’m sorry that this season has become about fights over manger scenes on public property, about complaining when clerks say, “Happy Holidays,” instead of “Merry Christmas,” about rampant commercialism and faux persecution.

I’m sorry that Christians in the United States can be so entitled when we’ve long enjoyed majority status, when we can be so blind to our own privilege.

It is ironic, really, because in the church calendar, the seasons of Advent and Christmas call us to reflect upon and celebrate what Christians believe was the most radical act of humility of all time - the incarnation.

The doctrine of the incarnation holds that the God of the universe, in his love for humanity, emptied himself of his power and became human, like us, in the form of Jesus.

The word incarnation literally means “to make into flesh” and refers to the apostle John’s teaching that “(t)he Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14).

“No one has ever seen God,” John explains, but Jesus “has made him known.”

In other words, if you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus -

Jesus, who was born as an oppressed minority in an occupied land,

Jesus who was an immigrant,

Jesus, who surrounded himself with the poor, the sick, the marginalized and the “untouchables,”

Jesus who was criticized by the religious for hanging out with sinners,

Jesus who treated women with dignity and respect,

Jesus who taught his disciples to love their enemies, to give without expecting anything in return, to overcome evil with love,

Jesus who suffered,

Jesus who wept,

Jesus who - while hanging on a Roman cross - said, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Quaker theologian Elton Trueblood put it this way: “The historic Christian doctrine of the divinity of Christ does not simply mean that Jesus is like God. It is far more radical than that. It means that God is like Jesus.”

It means that God suffers, God forgives, God fellowships with the poor, God cares for the sick, God loves His enemies.

Even as a lifelong Christian, I struggle with doubts about God. I struggle to make sense of the violence in the world, the violence in the Bible, the violence in my own heart. I don’t have all the answers.

But even when there’s nothing left to my faith but a little seed of hope, that hope is in the incarnation, in the radical teaching that God loved us enough to become like us, and that when God wanted to show us what he was like, God showed us Jesus.

Since we've got Ron dumping bible bile on us ad nauseum again, let's take a closer look at some other hideous demands from his Christian book of nasty, from both evil testaments:

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

      1 Timothy 2:11
"Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor."

Revelation 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

      Leviticus 25
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.
45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

I think it's silly to believe in such a stupid god and azzhole god, but there's no hate. What kind of stupid god can't make his own creation robust enough to withstand one twist of one woman's wrist? Why make the thing so "good" and yet so fragile? What kind of azzhole being would send his enemies to a place of eternal torture when he could just eliminate that torture chamber? Oh, and all while he tells us to "love our enemies." LOL!!!!

Do you really want to know why God sent His Son into the world?????

When you die, you are going to stand before God and give an account for your life. Because God is good, He is going to judge you according to the perfect, moral standard of His Law. If you’ve ever lied, stolen, or taken His name in vain; He will find you guilty of breaking His Law. Because God is good, He must punish your sin; and the punishment for all sin against God is eternity in Hell. But God is also merciful, loving, and kind in that He provided one way to escape that punishment; and that was through the gift of His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ: fully-God and fully-Man, without sin. He died on the cross a death He did not deserve, in order to take upon Himself the punishment you rightly deserve, for your sins against God. And then three days later He forever defeated sin and death when He rose from the grave.

What God requires of you is that you repent (turn from your sin and turn toward God) and by faith alone, receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

religion in the past can be the upside down of today, faith and cultures and everything changes to conform to the needs of its time, that is called evolution.Today we need to shift to a religion or faith that will conform to scientific reality, because in our age its the age of science,in the past when there was no science yet,and only myth, our religion was based on myth,What is permanent is His will.

I agree that the world's scriptures are scientifically ridiculous and change must occur. But of course, gods cannot be wrong, so any scripture that gives false information must be of a false religion, man-made in an ignorant era.

And humans are to change the supposed word of God? That means you tacitly understand that religion and gods are man made.

The texts can't change, and the texts are wrong, and growing numbers are willing to accept they are false. That is the change, and it is well along the way.

i am not a pshycologist or in any level a scientist,i am not a fluent english speaker either because i am Asian, but what i have observed in us humans is our individualistic view or consciousness of our existence,I can understand because each of us is only concerned of our personal survival,But belief in God ,specifically in the panthrotheistic faith inspires us to take a holistic view of reality, meaning it could be interpreted as the Whole ness or everything or Holy ness of God.He,God provided us through evolution the education and knowledge the science we needed for us to at least surmount the problems of basic survival and more, its a question of when we will shift our philosophy of life towards holism or oneness of humanity so that everybody shall be concerned of the problems of humanity in general.I think thats why the Pope a leader of a major religous faith or religion, appealed to the capitalists who are not yet enlightened to be one the first to shift their conscience,so if the rich catholics (posted in another blog) dont like his proposition shall introspect his ideas for I believe its Gods Will.

to Jerry, precisely you are correct its man made,in Panthrotheism, after the big bang when He(God) began to manifest himself to reality when matter was created ,through evolution after billons of years as science had explained, directed through his will the process of what is now,,today humans is the centerpiece of this procesd is task by Him to to do this for Him because we are part of Him including the whole of the universe.Pan the greek word for god, anthro means humans,theism,religion.Panthrotheism.

The Bible gives us a picture story to solve the riddle of existence and you keep getting sidetracked and lost in your defense of the empty tomb that is the soul of atheism.
The crucifixion of Christ is not a sacrifice to a Deity it is the sacrifice of a Deity. You can deny truth but if is by logic and reason you want to attack the way clearly shown by Christ at least get this point straight. If you wish to express your beliefs that the Bible is nonsense at least get the facts right.
Now, this point is critical because it is a picture that opens the last chapter in Gods plan for creation. It is Gods final physical revelation to all those that could be redeemed. On the Cross Christ said it is finished. What we see is what sin of man looks like to a Holy God. Christ took on the sins upon himself and the visual of what it did and does to man (Jesus hardly recognizable after beatings, crown of thorns) once the image of God in the beginning is no longer recognizable. Sin inflicts harm on others and is self inflicted wound that darkens whatever image of God remains in our being.
The Love and mercy of God says this is what sin looks like in a graphic way you can understand yet, I do not hold it against you as you are forgiven.

How much longer should God be patient with us?

          Was Jesus human?

          January 1, 2014 at 1:55 pm |
        • fred

Yes, Jesus was fully man. As man this was a picture to show us that we can still reflect the image of God within us. God is not of substance known to us and we only see one expression of God thru creation. This existence as we know it is that creation. We are clearly shown that in us is the capacity to reflect the Glory of God. Most of us choose what Adam and Eve chose over God.
The tomb was empty as the image of God is reflected in life not death. Death is an empty tomb without physical presence or the Glory of God. Pictures speak a thousand words which is why the Bible was mostly written in middle eastern picture language.

Haven't you heard, Jesus was seen for 40 days after the crucifixion by 500 some people. If it was a sacrifice to the gods then mankind failed again or thought they could pull off a fast one. Jesus was not brought up as sacrifice and the Romans were just executing a criminal with other criminals. This is as it was from the view of the physical world or to most atheists the view through the lens of philosophical naturalism.

Now, there is something rather than nothing outside of what we can know or do know. The sacrifice of the perfect lamb of God has a symbolic aspect that deals with the soul or for lack of a better word the spiritual. This is that awareness most people have which screams out there is something about existence that is more than not less than our presence. This is why man has worshiped all sorts of gods since earliest recorded history. We are wired to seek the truth about our existence individually and universally. Nomadic peoples would sacrifice a lamb to atone for sin to escape the death of an empty tomb which was the best they knew. When the time was right God revealed what it was these ancients were pointing at but not fully comprehending. God provided the perfect lamb to Abraham and to all of Abrahams children (those who would accept the gift) and the religious leaders carried out the perfect sacrifice again without knowing what they were doing. Why? Man just refuses to see the truth that is right before him and simply continues in his way. Jesus said I am the way yet we still don't follow. So, God simply took the sin (failure of mankind) upon himself in complete forgiveness.
The bondage of death (separation from God due to sin) symbolized by the empty tomb is broken. God did for us what we could never do for ourselves.

Jesus was the inspired Human 2000 years ago .he is God,His second coming the panthrotheistic interpretation is to judge and evolve or change the old faith.

Nice dodge, but it still means that your god requires a human sacrifice to appease its anger. A barbaric practice that believers embrace like it's a warm hug.

Dress it up in pretty language, pretend that the ends justify the means, do whatever you need to do to pretend it's not true. But it's right there in your book. You believe that human sacrifice is necessary to appease an angry god, and you glory in the bloodletting.

Now there's a great att.itude for you. Sounds like you're one of those who can't wait to see those who believe differently than you burning in eternal torment–by golly, then they'll see just how wrong they were and how right you were, right?

      what incredible arrogance

        HOW is that arrogance sam??

        December 31, 2013 at 9:16 pm |
        • The Squirrel

Something like this: "I am the personal best friend of the super amazing creator of everything, who magically protects me and is going to let me live forever in a supernatural Disneyland."

Compare with the arrogance of atheists: "I am just one of 7 billion people, getting through life as best I can, and when I die, it just stops. There is nothing supernatural, all is just natural forces at work."

          January 1, 2014 at 12:50 am |
        • kermit4jc

THATS not arrogance..apparently you have NO friends anhd are jealous of those of us who do. Cliaming to have friends is nOT arrogance..PLUS>.It isnOTHING of MY own doing..IM NOT special because of this..I am special because I..as well as YOU...are createdin GODS image..by GOD....to claim arrogance would be to say I am his friend cause I did things and am special.....

that is the future religion,we call that panthrotheism, but all of todays religion is His ,only that future humans ,about 300 years from now will be more of Him.

      December 31, 2013 at 11:12 pm |
      • futuristic

based on you concept of future religion ,is it not possible that Gods ultimate manifistation in reality is far beyond our wildest imagination,The stages of evolution might trancends to a stage in the future where we humans will develop a non biological being far superior than us in power ?If thats His will what can we do,but since we are Him it is our duty.

        December 31, 2013 at 11:27 pm |
        • neved

precisely ,you hit the nail on the head, that will be the far future, our duty now is how to initiate the process,The succeding generations of course has to be,but in our time through now at least we started.NETIZENS now has to work more.

          December 31, 2013 at 11:43 pm |
        • Did Ed Wood Jr. or L. Ron Hubbard come up with that?

Develop into a non-biological being? We are going to be rocks? Gods? Get real.

funny how neved and futuristic both make exactly the same grammatical mistakes but pretend like there is more than one of him.

          December 31, 2013 at 11:49 pm |
        • maybe

probably they are one or more, but the point here is that grammar and spelling is not that important,or you are suggesting that in the future we will be using Chinese characters here.or Russian alphabet,

to sure, the entries of toquide and rud is the proof you needed, and this is intentional,to show that Gods will can be channeled to people who are not necessarily fluent english speakers for He is refering to the whole humanity for inspiration and duty
