CNN Poll: Pope's approval rating sky-high

(CNN) - As Pope Francis prepares to celebrate his first Christmas at the Vatican, Americans' opinions of the pontiff appear to be as high as the dome on St. Peter's Basilica, according to a new survey.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Tuesday found that 88% of American Catholics approve of how Francis is handling his role as head of the 1.2 billion-member church.

The popular pontiff has also made a positive impression among Americans in general: Nearly three in four view Francis favorably.  The new survey suggests that the Pope is arguably the most well-regarded religious figure among the American public today, said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Nine months into his papacy, the Argentine-born Francis has captured attention with crowd-pleasing acts of compassion, from embracing a severely disfigured man, to washing the feet of juvenile delinquents, to hosting homeless men at his birthday Mass this month.

The Pope has also shown a common touch rare for such a lofty religious leader. He has eschewed the trappings of the papacy in favor of humbler digs, simpler vestments and a cheaper car. He worked as a bar bouncer and a janitor before he was a priest, and is not shy about telling people.

Pope: I was once a bar bouncer

According to one study, Pope Francis was the most talked about person on the Internet this year, and even atheists have professed appreciation for the 77-year-old pontiff.

The breadth of Francis' popularity was on display at American newsstands this month: he was named person of the year by both Time magazine and The Advocate, a gay and lesbian publication.

"While 2013 will be remembered for the work of hundreds in advancing marriage equality, it will also be remembered for the example of one man," The Advocate said. In remarks that rippled across the globe, Pope Francis said in July, "If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?

Pope Francis on gays: 'Who am I to judge?'

While the Pope has not changed church doctrine, he has urged Catholics to shift their focus from culture war issues to caring for people on society's margins, especially the poor.

"I see the church as a field hospital after battle," Francis said in September.

American Catholics appear to like the new course the Pope has set for their church. Nearly two-thirds agree with him about the amount of attention that should be paid to issues such as abortion and homosexuality, according to the CNN/ORC poll.

More than 85% of American Catholics say Francis is neither too liberal nor too conservative, and 86% say he's in touch with the modern world. By comparison, more than half of American Catholics said Pope John Paul II was out of step with the times in 2003, near the end of his 26-year-long papacy.

But Francis has been a fierce critic of the status quo, especially what calls the "idolatry of money" present in modern-day capitalism. In a papal statement last month, for example, the Pope blasted the theory of trickle-down economics, calling it "crude and naïve."

Conservative critics such as Rush Limbaugh pounced on the Pope's remarks, calling him a closet Marxist. But nearly two in three American Catholics agree with the Pope about capitalism and the free market's effects on the poor, according to the CNN/ORC poll.

Pope: Marxist ideology is 'wrong'

On other key issues for Catholics - the role of women in the church and the sexual abuse crises - Francis gets similarly high ratings from his American flock.

More than six in 10 American Catholics agree with Francis' comments about women in the church, according to the CNN/ORC poll. The Pope has said that women should have a larger role in church governance but cannot be ordained as priests.

Similarly, more than six in 10 American Catholics say Francis is doing a good job handling fallout from the church's sexual abuse scandal, even as most (64%) also say the church overall has done a poor job on the issue.

This month, the Vatican announced the creation of a new commission to care for victims of clergy sexual abuse and to prevent future crimes.

American Catholics had given especially low marks on the sexual abuse scandal to Francis' predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, with just 36% saying in 2010 that he had handled the issue well.

CNN's Holland said it's difficult to ascertain exactly how Francis' popularity stacks up against his predecessors, however. "It's a tough question since polling on Popes is pretty sparse," he said.

What's more, like political polling, approval ratings shift depending on the public mood and perception of a Pope's performance.

For example, three-quarters of American Catholics approved of how John Paul was leading the church in 1994; that number rose to 84% in 1999 and dipped to 64% in 2003, at the height of the church's sexual abuse crisis.

It remains to be seen how long the honeymoon will last for Francis, and how long he can continue to build goodwill among American Catholics.

The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International on December 16 through Thursday, with 1,035 adults nationwide, including 191 Catholics, questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Quoting your religious book, to prove your religion is right is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

I think the new Pope is a genuinely good man, no mater if I believe your bible or not.

      Good Morning Keith,

I'm quoting to share a perspective that others might not have thought of. Not to prove I'm right... Learning is a process...a journey.... no one knows everything.

Blessings on all you do, now and into the coming New Year.

Were there witnesses to the creation of the earth?

Job 38:4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare if thou hast understanding.
    5,6,
7 When the morning stars sang together, and ALL the sons of God shouted for joy?

A group of morning stars (daughters) and sons witnessed the creation of the earth – even before there was a garden in which for Adam to dwell.

Do you think they were clothed in the perfect Wisdom of God at that time?

While you are busily dumping your bible bile on us, let's have a look at what's really in there. From both foul testaments:

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

      1 Timothy 2:11
"Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor."

Revelation 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

      Leviticus 25
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.
45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

"Jesus changed the law by fulfilling it and lifting it into a higher realm. The law is fulfilled by LOVE.

The Revelation of God is progressive. And it is not limited because of an limitation by God, but because it must be given us degree by degree. Otherwise, if given all at once, it would overwhelm us and destroy us.

What is perfect for one dispensation becomes weak and beggarly for the next. Gal 4:4-9

      Jesus' Beloved:
"The Revelation of God is progressive."

That's not what your Bible says. It says that no more signs will be given. It says that *nothing* shall be added to it.

      December 28, 2013 at 10:54 am |
      • Jesus' Beloved

It's progressive for the one that receives the revelation.
How many times have you read the same chapter, and at different times you gain further revelation.
Everything is already there. Everything is a finished work. The Bible is a finished book, it will never need updating.
Yet, the believer never receives all that's there at once. He receives in increments.

        • VM

Never needs updating? Are you serious?

I'm sure glad that we didn't stick with those rules and regulations regarding curing leprosy with dead dove's blood - or stoning adulterers and sabbath workers - or the nod to owning slaves, just to name a few of the updates which civilized people have inst.ituted.

There is a time and place these things. We have a bigger population with greater convenience, which people worship unto death, that convenience, and we have more knowledge, and less wisdom. That is a prophetic truth.

          December 28, 2013 at 11:24 am |
        • Jesus' Beloved

Jesus showed us how to deal with these (all you've mentioned): LOVE

By the words of your mouth you can cure leprosy or any sickness or disease. If it has a name, it has to bow to the name of Jesus – I bet you're snickering at this one... I dare you to try it 🙂

And guess what, the Bible wasn't updated.
Everything you need to live a victorious life is found within it's pages. I don't know everything... I'm still learning...but the Holy Spirit lives in me, and knows all things and will bring them to my remembrance.

Everything you need to lead a wicked, murderous life is presented to you as instructions from Christian god, right there in the bible, both testaments:

          Numbers 31:17-18

as an agnostic atheist (complicated term but basically i dont deny the possibility of there being a god but want the proof up front) i quite like and respect this new pope. he seems to care more about people than the legalese of dogma which seems like the most likely position a loving god would take. i dont disdain the religious only their actions if they limit the lives of others. this pope seems like he wishes to spread his message but not force it and thus a good man in my book.

    To B:

"god doesn't make sense to atheists" – by saying that you are making your own choice that you do not want to believe that there is A Creator whereas others believe that there is The Creator who has no partners and there are others who associates partners with The Creator by saying that God has a son, or daughter or so on...

This is the choice that ppl makes by choice but not by force....

Not by force?? Give us a break!!! Islam was forced on every land conquered by Mohammed or by his armies after his mythical passage to heaven.

And let us end all the sweet talk about religion by mzh and Austin by coming to grips with the reality of the 21st century:

      • As far as one knows or can tell, there was no Abraham i.e. the foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam are non-existent.

      • As far as one knows or can tell, there was no Moses i.e the pillars of Judaism, Christianity and Islam have no strength of purpose.

      • There was no Gabriel i.e. Islam fails as a religion. Christianity partially fails.

      • There was no Easter i.e. Christianity completely fails as a religion.

      • There was no Moroni i.e. Mormonism is nothing more than a business cult.

      • Sacred/revered cows, monkey gods, castes, reincarnations and therefore Hinduism fails as a religion.

      • Fat Buddhas here, skinny Buddhas there, reincarnated/reborn Buddhas everywhere makes for a no on Buddhism.

      • A constant cycle of reincarnation until enlightenment is reached and belief that various beings (angels?, tinkerbells? etc) exist that we, as mortals, cannot comprehend makes for a no on Sikhism.

31:34 – Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

I will say Allah is life. but I know that I found supernatural light, throught the name and the blood of Jesus, and I believe He is God and resurrected. I have supernatural gifts and faith.

I believe that God , or Allah , calls our our hearts into peace through love. I agree with you about the idolaties of the church. but the one thing I see, is you think that Jesus, The Holy Spirit, and the Holy Father is polytheistic theology.

That is not correct. You have heard the wrong interpretation of the triune God. I am against the polytheistic approach that christian sects are wrong on (like mormons ect.)
Jesus Christ was not born through Mary. He simply went through the womb. He was in the beginning.
      John 1

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

Austin, we are making progress now that you acknowledge that those murderous passages exist. Time for you to study them again, and think about why your god can't deal with "satan", which he must also have created according to your crazy stories, rather than have humans have to deal with it:

If you look at the catholic church, and set aside the value of every indvidual soul, what you have is a highly controversial ceremony and "spiritual program." If you read the new testament from front to back, you can clearly see that the catholic church has issues. 1 Praying to mary(something else that 600 strongs concordences opposes by example). 2. Priesthood (contrary to the finshed work of christ as specified in Hebrews) 3 confession something we do to a brother or God

These 3 things stand to stand in direct opposition to the "finished work of the New Covenant"

furthermore, the pope kisses a white a baby (a graven image). The pope kisses a Koran (this is a sign that contradicts "biblical authority")

He is kissing butt , at all expenses. He had a chance to proclaim the misinformation in the Koran, instead He was a coward. He is delivering souls into the hand of the devil.

        God can not be pleased.

How is kissing a baby kissing a graven image?
          It's a baby.
Also, please look up why JPII kissed the Koran.
You've got the internet; USE IT.

He is not kissing butt. But you are once again showing your religious bigotry and bashing Christians.

You are in no position to judge. That isn't your job. You shall be judged in the same manner as you judge.

Maddy I will look it up now, but the baby, not the kissing is the graven image. The baby implies that Jesus was of a whiter tone? and if wrong, which we have every reason to believe that that is wrong, then how does that honor God? it doesnt', it reflects a very serious idolatrous selfishness, and lack of humanity. That is beside the point, The ten commandments say, do not form an image of anything in heaven, and worship it. What did the people do to worship the calf? they focused their attention on it. nothing more.. they had the wrong idea , and the reasoning here, is God is spirit, and not any mans image. you are taking what should be impowering you inside in truth, and you are going outside of yourself and focusing on your senses, which are fallen. you cant trust what you see.

second, all these rituals are flat out empty flambouyance. If the baby was alive, then fine, but for a ceremony, such useless expressions are of absolutely zero value. What would the pople bother himself making a show with zero value? for even one second? as a world leader, this completely lacks judgment. This is warped and senseless tradition, and therefore garbage to God. God is not impressed with a theatrical play. He is not impressed by people who are venerating a pope just because he is a pope.

I am only interested in the pope if He is a good preacher teacher. take the ceremony out , and do something new every time. and preach the word of God . Every bit of it. We don't worship the pope. We worship the word of God. instead of 10 heal maryies, pray to God and read the word. and meditate on the word.

Maddy, when is the last time that you read the new testament? can you name the books of the New testament? Do you know what the "who.re that rides the beast " refers to? (I do not claim to know "who it is " referring to).

False religion, is a main theme of the New testament. Let me ask this. When Jesus went into the temple and turned over the tables, was He kissing people? Did Jesus kiss the Pharisees? Jesus was compassionate to individuals, but not the figure heads of false religion. He should not have kissed the Koran, period.

Maddy, does Jesus respect the Koran? No.

Jesus spoke of hell, more often than heaven. I do not know why the Koran was kissed, you can cut and past though. Jesus did not kiss the Torah, of the Talmud. They were secretely trying to kill Jesus, and they were trying trick Him.

28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

Maddy, another thing to consider about the appearences of the Pope where he kisses the Koran. This act falls short of anything significant for the good because the gospel has not been preached to the clerics. This was a sign of false peace, because the peace of their soul, Jesus Christ has not been administered. He has been tucked away behind a kiss. In other words, he acted as a diplomat of of peace, and a coward for the gospel. Did he say anything about the need for Muslims to come to the cross for salvation? or not?

          if not, He messed up.

Explain the baby thing to me. Is the Pope kissing a statue or a live baby?
If a statue, please give me the occasion. Just saying "the Pope kissed a baby" doesn't give me context.

As for the rest of your posts, I read some of the NT every day.

I am uninterested in your quiz.

Lay off my faith. You are not to judge.

I am as likely to go to Hell as you are.

if would be scary to me if i thought Jesus was a "had son" rather than the essence of God in human flesh, God in his expression of love. He and the father and the spirit are one.

    John 1

    The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

Jesus was not born when He was born. He just went through the process of becoming fully man to die for your sins.

"Jesus was not born when He was born. He just went through the process of becoming fully man to die for your sins."

So Jesus wasn't actually born but Christians love to celebrate his birthday, and he never fully died either since supposedly God is immortal so he never paid for any sins. If you want to quantify it into being "born as a human" and "dying as a human" then it's not really a fair trade for Adams sins he was supposedly paying the ransom for. It's more like being James Frey who wrote "A Million Little Pieces" which had millions of people buying it and reading it and believing in it as his own personal experiences but then when they find out it was all fiction they throw the book out as a fraud. If Jesus is God then the whole premise of a ransom sacrifice is a fraud.

The threat of death did not deter Perpetua from taking instructions in the Christian faith. She discovered that the Gospels were true and offered the way to eternal life and happiness. Jesus of Nazareth became a real living person to her, someone greater than the emperor, someone who was king of heaven and the whole earth as well. Despite the objections of her family, Perpetua pursued the Christian faith with great enthusiasm and conviction. Her brother Secundus soon followed in becoming a Christian as well.

        St Perpetua. Yes.
It is worth noting that her slave, St Felicity, was also instructed in Christianity; she was martyred at the same time as St Perpetua.

Poor St Felicity was pregnant at the time.

A swordsman was appointed with the task of completing what the cow had started. The man was a novice, so instead of piercing Perpetua right through, the blade accidentally hit her collar bone. She shrieked but did not die.

Unafraid of death, the bleeding Perpetua picked up the blade and set it upon her own neck, in order that the swordsman might finish the job.

      Here's one of mine

I looked all over to find your eyes
But you were someone else's truth
      And someone else's lies
      Cynicism atheism
      religion, division, decision
      Heartache, mistake, stomach ache
      Disdain, head pain, coat stain
      gone insane
      But no one noticed
And it never ever was and will never ever be
      You see?
I seached the world, and what did I find?
      You were someone else's god
      But you just weren't mine
