Satanists unveil design for OK statehouse statue

(CNN) - Satanists have unveiled their design for a proposed statue at the Oklahoma state Capitol, including a place for people to sit on the devil's lap "for inspiration and contemplation."

The New York-based Satanic Temple submitted its proposal to Oklahoma officials this month after applying for a spot on Capitol grounds late last year. The Satanists say their statue would "complement and contrast" with a Ten Commandments monument placed at the Capitol in Oklahoma City in 2012.

The Satanists' proposed monument depicts Baphomet, a goat-headed pagan idol sitting on a 7-foot-tall throne inscribed with an inverted pentagram. In an artist's rendering provided by the Satanic Temple, smiling children look adoringly at the devilish figure.

"The statue will serve as a beacon calling for compassion and empathy among all living creatures," Lucien Greaves, a spokesman for the Satanic Temple, said in a prepared statement. "The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.”

According to its Indiegogo page, the Satanists have raised more than $16,000 toward their goal of $20,000 for the monument, which Greaves said would "be a historical marker commemorating the scapegoats, the marginalized, the demonized minority and the unjustly outcast.”

The Temple of Satan is less a religious body organized around rituals and regular meetings than a roving band of political provocateurs, according to Greaves. They believe Satan is a "literary construct," the spokesman said, not an actual being with horns and hooves.

The proposed statue includes quotations from poets Lord Byron and William Blake.

“Prisons are built with stones of Law, Brothels with bricks of Religion” runs the Blake quotation. The 18th-century poet was a Christian, albeit one with a mystical bent and little use for traditional morality.

The statue's main figure, Baphomet, has long been associated with Satan, Greaves said. In the 12th century, the Knights Templar, a group of Christian crusaders, were accused of worshiping Baphomet in their secretive rituals.

"From the mythology created by these accusations against the Templars, we now have a symbol for Satan pictured as a goat-headed beast," Greaves said.

Since the 1960s, a variation of the horned goat head has been the official symbol of the Church of Satan, which is not affiliated with the Temple of Satan. The head of the Church of Satan has told CNN he does not approve of the idea of a Satanist statue on public grounds.

Oklahoma state Rep. Paul Wesselhoft told CNN that he doesn't think the Satanists' statue will be approved.

“What will disqualify them has really nothing to do with Satan as such; it's that it has no historical significance for the state of Oklahoma,” he said.

Trait Thompson, chairman of Oklahoma's Capitol Preservation Committee, said he has not received the Satanists' proposed design yet. He also said that no applications will be considered until a lawsuit over the Ten Commandments monument is settled.

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued over Oklahoma's Ten Commandments monument, calling it an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion.

After news broke of the Satanists' proposal, the state was flooded with requests from religious groups seeking to erect monuments to their own faith, including Hindus and Pastafarians, a satirical religion that "worships" the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

An Oklahoma lawmaker told CNN that the Satanists' message wouldn't fly in the Bible Belt state, where nearly two-thirds of the population is Christian.

"Any monument displayed on state property should reflect the values of Oklahoma or memorialize those who built or defended our freedom," Rep. Bob Cleveland said Tuesday. "In my opinion, this Satanist monument does not meet with the values of Oklahomans."

I'm shocked, I say – SHOCKED at the tone of what (little) I've read.
For my part, yes, and no. Religious freedom should apply to all groups. If they can raise the money, then they should be able to erect their Idol right next to the Christian one. It's that simple.
However, then they have to erect one of Ba'al, and Tiamat, and Thor, Zeus, and ... well, you get the idea.
Far simpler and more logical to get rid of the 10 Commandments...

Why? Why not allow Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, etc, but simply mandate that each one fit an exact form? I like the stone chair format. Mandate that they all be stone chairs of fixed dimensions and specified materials so they all kind of match. Mandate that they not have content that attacks any other religion and that elevates the community. Then let each chair get planted out in a nice place around the court house, maybe like a garden area where people could sit and confer.

You are another one who has fallen for the satan inspired bible. He inspired the bible for people like you.

A god would not have gotten so many things wrong in the bible, and god would not make the bible so easy to corrupt.
Belief in the bible has caused wars, murders, faster spread of diseases, and no two people interpret the bible in the same way, leading to chaos, which is what the devil wants.

You have been deceived by the devils greatest trick....inspiring the bible then convincing people (like you ) that the bible is god's word.

Jesus Christ is the son of the living God and the only name by which we may be saved.

But the same law that is supposed to let Christians practice their religion legally requires non-Christians to be given equal opportunity. That includes Satanists. Oh they will get their "reward" upon final judgment but that is not up to you or me. It's our responsibility to live our lives in accordance to Jesus's wishes. If you read the Gospels, he overturned the money changers in the temple of God's people, not the idols of Rome. The Church has plenty of things that need fixing.

In Genesis, god was the evil one who wanted to repress their knowledge, but Lucifer showed them the truth. God lied to them and the snake told them the truth about eating the apple and learning about the world. It sounds to me like Lucifer freed Adam and Eve from the prison known as Eden where humans were experimented on and kept as slaves. Then after they are free, god goes into a fit of rage and drowns the entire earth in anger. Look at god's death toll. It is HUGE compared to Satan. The guy committed genocide more than once, and as evil as they claim Lucifer is, he doesn't even come close to the destruction caused by god. Who else would create a place specifically designed to torture people? Who else would slowly murder a man's entire family and destroy his livelihood to win a bet?

How do we know that Satan or Lucifer isn't the true god and that the bible wasn't an elaborate deception created by the devil (Yahweh)? Gambling your soul away on a guess based on ancient texts out of fear of torture doesn't sound logical at all, especially considering how many other versions of the scriptures have been found and conflict with today's bible. How many benevolent leaders gain support by threatening to torture to those who don't agree with them? I can answer that. None.

Don't Be Deceived By The Lies of Lucifer…

Lucifer has many ways to deceive people. And the atheists and the satanists make Lucifer's job too easy. Among his most popular ways of deception, is Lucifer gets people to believe that certain things are not true and not real. For example, he'll get you to believe that there is no God, and that God is not real. He'll get you to believe that there is no hell, and that hell is not real. And for satanists, he'll get you to believe that there is no devil or no Satan, and that Satan is not real, and that Satan was just a literary figure someone made up. And he'll get you to believe that nonsense just so you will embrace that cult, and in doing so, you are unknowingly embracing Lucifer. And in doing so, it will send your soul to hell…

The truth, however, is their really is a God, there is a Satan, and there is a hell. All of those things exist. And only the most simplest of minds would believe otherwise. And that same hell is awaiting for all who don't believe. And Lucifer knows that. And his whole plan is to keep you from realizing that fact or finding out that fact until you end up in hell. And the very proof that those things exist is none other than Jesus Christ himself. For if there was no God, and was no Satan, and was no hell, then rest assured, there'd also be no Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ would never have came to earth and died on the cross. And we all know, that is not the case. For history itself bears witness that Jesus Christ was here. Furthermore, if mankind had "evolved", rather than was created, then Jesus Christ also would not have existed. So Jesus Christ is the anchor to the truth, and is firm proof against all of those lies and against all of those deceptions. And that is the same Jesus you'll have to face on Judgment Day, which is coming soon. And if your name is not written in the Book of LIfe, then you shall be cast into the lake…

That same Jesus had this to say about Lucifer…

Luke 10:18 – And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven…

John 8:44 – …He (Lucifer) was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it…

So that same Jesus who died on the cross personally witnessed Lucifer fall from heaven, on the day Lucifer rebelled against God. Jesus was there, and he witnessed it all. That same Jesus also goes on to say, that Lucifer is a liar, and is the father of it. So only a fool would believe the lies of Lucifer, and would believe that Lucifer does not exist. And Jesus Christ himself is the anchor of truth, and is firm proof against all such lies…

Considering the bible is wrong in so many places, considering that belief in the stories of the bible have lead to faster spread of disease, death, destruction , considering that people use belief in the bible to justify hate and violence, considering that no teo people interpret the bible in the same way, causing chaos ( which is a devils playground)...it is more likely that YOU have been deceived and are actually an agent of satan, since the bible was clearly inspired by satan, not any gods.....god would not have gotten so much wrong.

The greatest trick the devil ever played , was to inspire the bible be written, and convince people that god did it...he has been laughing at the deceived puppet believers ever since.

My question to you is this

God could literally negate any lie told by satan if he wanted to, and NO ONE would then have to be cast into any lake.

Why does he still allow the souls of man to be in constant peril when he could easily disprove everything you allege satan has ever tried to pass off as truth?

      • Opposing View

Yes, God could eliminate Lucifer at any time. But doing so would not serve his purpose. There is a purpose for Lucifer…

The whole earth is nothing but a "giant testing ground", a place God created for testing human souls. And your sole purpose for being on earth is to prove yourself worthy to be with God in heaven. Those who prove themselves worthy, will be saved. Those who do not prove themselves worthy, shall be cast into the lake.

God is using Lucifer to help test your soul while you are on earth. That is why you face evil temptations every single day. God is not going to take anyone to heaven unless you have proven to him that you are truly worthy of being in heaven. Even the devil wants to go to heaven. Therefore, to test you, to see if you are worthy, God allows you to face many temptations every single day. And you are then judged based on the choices you make. God will not force you to make any certain choice. Instead, whatever choice you make will be of your own free will. But that does not mean there are no consequences. For there are indeed consequences for what choice you make. And God tells you in advance what those consequences are. For example, for those who choose to follow the ways of God (despite the evil temptations they feel each day) then God will save you and will take you to heaven. But for those who choose to follow evil and to follow the ways of Lucifer, then when you die, you will go to hell, and shall be cast into the lake. God does not want or need evil people in heaven. So you can do right and go to heaven, or you can do wrong and go to hell. Those are your choices. And the choice you make shall determine your fate…

Then why should the devil be cast into a lake of fire? He's only doing what god wants and/or needs him to do to make the "testing grounds" work. Indeed most ancient jews saw the devil not as an incarnation of evil but as god's prosecutor.

Actually, it's believed that God will actually take care of Satan ... one day ... always soon, but never now. If that's the case, then what's he waiting for? The chance to win more souls? Well, he'll also be losing more souls too, right? Why not assume that the end times will be many millions of years from now then, or does God only need a specific number of souls to keep him going for all eternity?

Venn. Actually, everything you see happening in the world today is happening according to God's great plan, and is happening according to his timetable. Understand, the bible is prophecy, is a foretelling of things to come. God is watching over history to make sure that everything the bible says is being fulfilled. He will not allow the next event to happen or take place until the previous event has been fulfilled. For example, Jesus himself said, "the end cannot come until he has been rejected of this generation". That rejection is what you see happening now. The world is becoming more and more evil, people are even worshipping Lucifer. And it will only get worse. But be not alarmed. It is all prophecy. For the end cannot come until all these things be fulfilled. And the faster these things happen, the faster the end shall come…

Lucifer already knows his end. He already knows he will be defeated and cast into the lake (at the Battle of the Armageddon, set to take place about 1,000 years from now). His only goal is to take as many souls with him as he can so he will have company in the lake. In that regard, God already knows who the sheep are. He already knows who will be saved, and who won't be saved. He knew it from the beginning. That is why Jesus said "I know my sheep and I shall loose not a one of them."...

There is a specific timetable to the bible. God created the earth in 7000 years (7 God days) but he also slated that the reign of mankind upon the earth (from Genesis to Revelation) would only last for 7000 years as well. If you follow the bible's timetable, Jesus arrived on the earth 4,000 years later after the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (this is confirmed in scripture). It has now been 2000 more years since that time (2014 AD). Thus, we are now living in the 6,000 year time period since God created the earth. Mankind only has one more 1000 years to go before the reign of mankind will end and Judgment Day will arrive (Judgment Day will arrive right after the Battle of Armageddon). The reign of mankind will not extend beyond 7,000 years. And Lucifer knows that. He knows his time is short, and he knows his time is running out. That is why he is fighting harder than ever to deceive people. But no matter how hard he fights to deceive people, the only people he will deceive will be the goats. All sheep will still be saved…

Jesus said he would return while some of the people he was speaking to were still alive. After 2000 years, it's safe to stop waiting.

Sungrazer… Jesus said no such thing. That is a misinterpretation of the scriptures. There is a specific timetable to the bible, and all events prophesied in the bible are still on schedule.

Remember that same Jesus also said this…

Luke 17:23 – (Jesus speaking) And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them. 24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day. 25 But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation….

Luke 17:26 – (Jesus speaking) And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. 27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; 29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. 30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

As confirmed in the above scriptures, Jesus is saying the day would come when men would attempt to predict when he would return. Jesus said some will say "see here, or see there" – meaning they'd say "at this time" or "at that time". But Jesus said, "follow them not" Instead, Jesus said when it happens, it will happen suddenly and at a time when no man knoweth, and will happen as suddenly as a flash of lightening in the sky. But Jesus also gives us a clue of when that day shall come. He said that before it happens, he must first suffer many things and be rejected of this generation That rejection is what you see going on right now – with the rise of atheism and gays and with people worshipping Lucifer – once that rejection is fully complete, only then shall Jesus come….

In the bottom scriptures above, Jesus also warns that there would be people who would feel that since so much time has elapsed since Jesus said he would return, that he must not be coming. So why not party and drink and be merry. Jesus said they felt the same way in the days of Noah, until the flood came and destroyed them all. He said they also felt the same way in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah, until God rained down fire and brimstone and destroyed them as well. And Jesus said it would be the same way in this day. That some people will feel he is not coming. But at a time they think not – Jesus would come. And for those caught unsaved and unprepared for it, your destination wll be the lake…

"Jesus Christ would never have came to earth and died on the cross. And we all know, that is not the case. For history itself bears witness that Jesus Christ was here."

There are no contemporary historical records that Jesus existed. He may have, but it would difficult, if not impossible, to prove. Even if he did exist, it doesn't logically follow that he was the son of god.

Sungrazer… If you truly believe that, then you're dumber than you look. There are factual and historical records of the existence of Jesus Christ everywhere you look. But the realty is, I don't think even you are that dumb. Are dumb enough to truly believe that no such records exist. Instead, I just think, like many atheists, you're just in deep denial about it, and you don't want to accept the truth. But being in denial about it will in no wise save you…

As for your contention you don't believe Jesus Christ was the son of God – your contention don't mean a thing. If you have no "proof" he wasn't the son of God, then what is your contention worth? Answer: It isn't worth a thing…

Furthermore, the bible has long warned us about people like you. It says that people like you are "deceivers" and is "antichrist". And as we all know, a deceiver and antichrist cannot be trusted…

2 John 1:7 – For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist….

1 John 4:3 – And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist...

We all know that gods go to planets to be their own sons so that they can sacrifice themselves to themselves. This way they can resurrect themselves so they can go be with themselves. RIDICUOLOUS!

"There are factual and historical records of the existence of Jesus Christ everywhere you look." Name one that wasn't either a forgery or was referring to what christians believed, not necessarily what actually happened. Remember, if you are willing to believe a source about something you should probably be sure of everything they said...

G to the T... I was referring to real world history and not the bible. There are plenty of real world historical records which fully support that Jesus Christ existed. And if you're too dumb to know that (and maybe you are, I had though you were just joking) then you're far too ignorant for me to even be wasting my time with. So learn some truth and then get back to me...

You're making the claim. The onus of proof is on you.

Well, if it the group raises enough money to build the statue, if they apply for the permit or whatever is required to erect it, and if it is denied, I see a legal battle in the future. That's a bunch of "ifs"

I feel like I see something along these lines a couple of times every year, not necessarily satanist but someone challenging religion imbedded in Government in a headline grabbing way, and it rarely goes anywhere.

It DOES go somewhere. When a small town in East Tennessee forced the "Flying Spaghetti Monster" onto the courthouse lawn the county passed a resolution to stop allowing religious-themed nonsense on the grounds. And this is in one of the most conservative districts I have ever seen.

Forcing a DIFFERENT religion down the throats of the Christians DOES make a difference.

Extremists organizations should FORCE their symbology all over all of the courthouses. I wanna see huge Buddhas, giant pentagrams, Indians smoking pot and tripping on Mescaline, a golden calf, etc. Ram it down their throats....the same way they ram their personal agenda through state and local governments.

      Go get 'em!

    Religious Tolerance from Oklahoma Christians:

In 2009, the state unveiled a license plate design featuring an image of a Apache warrior. It was a depiction of a sculpture currently on display at the Gilcrease Mueseum. The Apache is firing a sacred prayer arrow into the sky to bring his people’s prayers to their gods so that they would get rain.
It became the standard license plate and motorists who covered it up faced a fine, or they had to pay an additional fee to get a custom plate.

Mr. Keith Cressman, a Methodist minister, filed suit against the state alleging violations of his rights to freedom of speech, due process, and the free exercise of religion under the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
He wanted an alternate license plate for free becuase he didn't like feeling forced to display religious iconography from a faith that was not his own.

While the case was dismissed at first, the U.S. Court of Appeals later found in his favour, declaring "the image conveys a religious/ideological message".

Jura Nanuk, founder & President of Central-European Religious Freedom Inst.itute, wrote the minister an open letter in which she stated:
"Did it ever occur to you that instead of pretending to be a victim due to your hurt feelings you might show some compassion for people who were taken to the brink of extinction by your ancestors?
I sincerely hope your God will forgive you your ignorance and lack of compassion."

Christian monument on government property? A-OK in OK.
Any other religion? Illegal and immoral.

I think this is a great idea, what better way to prove that we are truly equals. I'm so sick of having god and Jesus stuffed down my throat, it's everywhere you look, on money, in schools, in the courthouse where it has no business being.

    Something to consider:

Jesus was a bit "touched". After all he thought he spoke to Satan, thought he changed water into wine, thought he raised Lazarus from the dead etc. In today's world, said Jesus would be declared legally insane.

I've dreamed about "Satan" almost every night since I was a kid, but when I dream. In my dreams he's got more of a headless horseman/ Jack of the Lantern/pumpkin head thing going on.

As somebody who analyzes dreams, I'd say there's something in your life causing great fear in your subconscious. Once you figure out what it is and learn to control your fear the dreams should go away.
