Megachurch pastor resigns, citing 'moral failing'Fort Lauderdale, Florida (WPLG Miami) The senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale has resigned after confessing to cheating on his wife, according to WPLG Miami. Pastor Bob Coy, 58, reportedly confessed a "moral failing which disqualifies him from continuing his leadership role at the church" to Calvary leaders on Wednesday. A board meeting was called the next day, when he resigned. Coy, who has led the church since its founding in 1985, said he will now focus his full attention on his personal relationship with God and his family. The radio, television and digital media that distributes Coy's teachings have also been suspended. "The governing board of the church is providing counselors and ministers who will help guide him through the process of full repentance, cleansing and restoration," Calvary Chapel said in a statement. Calvary is one of the largest churches in Florida, with some 20,000 members who worship in 10 locations across the state. "Trusting in God's providence, protection, provision and direction, the staff of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale will continue our mission to 'make disciples' through regular services at all campuses and through myriad other ministries the church has established over the years," the statement said. At an open service at the church Sunday, a letter was read to the congregation from Coy and the board. Assistant pastors who are on staff will continue their usual rotating schedule as teaching pastors for all services, the statement said.

I was raised and schooled in the catholic faith and no longer participate as I did when I was younger but it seems to me that irregardless of this mans actions it was the message he preached that is important. It seems to me that those that are outraged just don't get it. I am very grateful for my catholic upbringing and detest catholic bashing so to bash this guy is not something I will engage in.
Ah .. the classic, "Do as I say not as I do" scapegoat!
btw .. you just "bashed" those who are outraged, because they "just don't get it". How passive aggressive of you.
the message he preached was one of religious brainwashing. not a good thing at all.
Religion is not a prerequisite for morals.
Right slick nick, get mad at everyone else instead of the man who did the act. How phony of you.
irregardless is not a word first off and the word he preaches says something along the lines of adultery being a 'sin', so it would appear he's a hypocrite.
I'm more interested in how much money he made
I thought that having a "moral failing" was actually a prerequisite for the job.
10+
If handled correctly it can be very profitable.
"said he will now focus his full attention on his personal relationship with God"
Always loved that buzz-phrase "personal relationship with God or Jesus"
I've known my sister for over 6 decades. Although I live in Tampa and she lives in Boise, so we only see each other every couple of years, I can tell you:
• how tall she is.
• what color her eyes are.
• what color and how curly her hair is.
• the different kinds of prescription drugs she takes, and what for.
• which parts of her have been operated on.
• which colleges she attended.
• what jobs she's held.
• what cities she's lived in.
• what her hobbies are.
• the names and breeds of the various dogs and cats she's had thru the years.
• her favorite sports teams, and which one she has season tickets for.
• the TV programs she watches regularly.
• that it's her on the phone just from the sound of her voice.
• her att¡tude toward eating meat.
• whom she voted for in the last presidential election.
• what kind of medical care she wants in case of a terminal illness.
• her favorite color.
• and about 50 other things.
Now that's a personal relationship. Could any of you Bible-thumpers manage even half a dozen comparable answers about your "deep, personal friend" Jesus? And, even assuming your overwrought imagination could in fact gin up a few stabs at them, what are chances that they'd agree with any other equally deluded True Believer? OTOH, you could ask any of my sister's other good friends about the above characteristics, and they'd give you the exact same answers I would. That's because my sister, unlike your Jesus, is real — a 3-dimensional, flesh-and-blood, living, breathing, real-world human being, with a life, preferences, substance, and history.
So, Mr. or Ms. True Believer, let's say you're walking across library mall one day, you see your good buddy Jesus in a crowd of folks ahead of you, and you holler "Hey, J, dude, wait up!". Would he?
Let's not kid ourselves. This would never even happen because there's no way you'd be able to pick Jesus out of a crowd. Heck, you couldn't pick him out of a 1-person lineup. You wouldn't know him if he walked up to you on the street and handed you his business card. So we both know exactly what your claim to have a "deep, personal relationship with God/Jesus Christ" is. It's bullsh¡t. You know it's bullsh¡t. Everybody else knows it's bullsh¡t. The only reason you keep on repeating this bullsh¡t is because it's the slogan of the club that some con artist or charlatan has suckered you into believing you really want to be a member of. All you have to do is keep repeating the magic bullsh¡t phrase "I have a deep, personal relationship with God/Jesus Christ" and you can keep going to the club meetings. (Provided you keep paying the dues, too; let's not forget what's really important here.)
But don't think that repeating that phrase is going to win you anything but contempt or possibly some degree of pity from anyone with a functioning brain. All you're really demonstrating is that you don't know diddly about real relationships or the way the real world really works. You are, in short, a pathetic dupe. And full of bullsh¡t, to boot.
It's really funny to read comments from sanctimonious atheists eager to caste judgment upon a Christian with a malfunctioning zipper. For so long they cry 'judge not that you be not judged', yet when the shoe is on the other foot they jump right in to cast the first stone of guilt and condemnation.
***
No atheist would ever commit adultery would they? None would ever lie, cheat, steal or murder would they? So pure and holier than everyone are they. So eager to forgive faster than any Christian would do are they?
***
In truth atheists dip their tongues into lies and pompous self-righteousness the same as everyone – with one important difference. They have NO HOPE of forgiveness by Almight God in Jesus Christ because they don't believe in it. Atheists will die in their sin because they have no one to forgive them.
***
Talk about digging your own grave. hahahahaha
and that's just me, hollering from the choir loft...
Wow, where did you get all that, Fallacies-R-Us?
We also never claim (for money or free) to be the moral authority of others. If you can't see that's where the real problem lies (pun intended), you are truly blinded by your "faith".
Also, it's pretty funny that you ramble about atheists judging .. while you are judging those of us who aren't stepping down as a pastor for being a creep. Pretty absurd when you think about it .. but I'm sure you won't.
"It's really funny to read comments from sanctimonious atheists eager to caste judgment upon a Christian"
+++ and even more hilarious for your sanctimonious bible to cast judgments upon an atheist. christians say atheists are going to hell to be tortured all eternity - what does an atheist say that even comes close to that?
"No atheist would ever commit adultery would they? None would ever lie, cheat, steal or murder would they? So pure and holier than everyone are they. So eager to forgive faster than any Christian would do are they?"
+++ your words, not ours. of course atheists have cheated on a spouse. and they should be held accountable as well. but as a religious leader that preaches about the evils of adultery, it's a special kind of hypocrisy. like an atheist leading a club that has special rules against adultery.
"They have NO HOPE of forgiveness by Almight God in Jesus Christ because they don't believe in it. Atheists will die in their sin because they have no one to forgive them."
+++ hahaha, here you go, judging atheists while you complain about being judged by them. you, sir or madam, are a GIANT hypocrite. and btw, we don't need your characters from a book of myth to be a good person. protip: you can be a good person without believing in a sky-fairy.
"Talk about digging your own grave. hahahahaha
and that's just me, hollering from the choir loft..."
+++ you sure do delight in the thought of atheists being sent to hell, don't you? the thought of a non-believer being tortured gives you a religious b.oner. you're a terrible person.
I don't care about his cheating....it is the preaching while cheating that is annoying.
I will be rotten at the least.....more likely broken down completely.....all that I was gone.....
but lets as sume you re right and god scra pes me up and reas sembles my body....now you have to reconstruct the contents of my head – the electrical patterns and enzyme triggers that made me- me.
then you pitch me in the big lake o fire....and have to reas semble me all over again....id have to be physical because no brain, no nervous system....no pain....and he wants to do this to me forever.....nothing better to do with his time?
oh but it gets better....you know that fat bossy guy that backs up everything he says with a punch...and you know his wife and kids that are the clumsiest lot in town – with all the black eyes and bruises that leap to this b@stard's tune.....well that ll be God and his Christians....you.
be glad your afterlife is a fiction.
He swings both ways: old and new testaments. Bring on the concubines.
Was he banging a man or a woman?
it was proly that hawt red-head that plays the organ.
Both.
Sweet Jesus, Mary, and Joseph !!!
""The governing board of the church is providing counselors and ministers who will help guide him through the process of full repentance, cleansing and restoration," Calvary Chapel said in a statement."
+++ yep, they already know he'll be forgiven. this guy will be back to swindle money from the pews in 6 months. he'll say, "i have professed my sins and been forgiven! halleluiah! now give me your money!!!"
What better way to connect with the great unwashed masses than to claim that even a pastor is just like them .. & they too can be saved!!
Just more HYPOCRISY. Nothing new.
"..said he will now focus his full attention on his personal relationship with God and his family."
Was that really so hard to do to begin with? Especially since you're a pastor?
Being atheist, I'm a better Christian than this guy ... and a large percentage of "Christians".
i use the bible as a door stop and i'm a better christian
christians go to prison per capita at a much, much higher rate than christians.
christians divorce rate is much higher than atheist divorce rate
^^ facts to back up your statement ^^
Thanks for the backup facts ... but it's been my experience (& I'm sure yours too) that it's self evident.
no problem.
typo btw christians go to prison per capita at a much, much higher rate than christians.
should have read: christians go to prison per capita at a much, much higher rate than atheists.
When will he apologize to the tens of thousands of people he bilked out of their hard-earned money with his crazy fairy tales?
sorry no refunds!
Your reward is in heaven.
And what is this reward? 72 virgins?
And the opportunity to meet all the suicide bombers. Same god.
religion and the worship of god(s)............... the ultimate ponzi scheme
One man's moral failing is another man's entertainment!
The standards for Pastors are very high and there is no excuse for waywardness. However, one wonders as to how many men at 58 have never cheated?!
About 70 percent of married men admitted to cheating on their wives! That would be 7 out of every ten men. What happened to MORALS????
Morals mean nothing. What's good morals to you may mean nothing to someone else. Morals is just a way for people to get involved in other people business.
The head of that particular organ has no morals, cue Bab's singing "Feelings".
The difference is other men that have cheated don't stand at a pulpit castigating thousands about the vileness of offending the god they are extolling with "sin".
While holding out his hand asking for money....I forgot that part.
Wait, how could this man cheat on his wife, when he knows that God is watching, seeing everything, and he'll be judged in the afterlife. If he KNOWS this, then he wouldn't cheat!
Oh yeah, even pastors don't believe their own fairy tales.
he thought god was busy looking for flight 370.
I've been saying that for years as proof they don't actually believe what they're saying!
If your mother was watching .. you wouldn't do it & it wouldn't be difficult to stop yourself. But a god who will punish you to fire with satan for "eternity" and you just can't stop yourself?! What a crock of baloney these people are.
Filling the void between the legs of females has been the downfall of man "sinvpce the beginning" of time. Nothing new here.
Bill Clinton cheated on his wife Hillary dozens of times, but never had to resign.
bill wasn't a preacher preaching morals.
And your point is...?
oh boo hoo hoo...
i guess this swindler will just have to console himself with the millions of dollars he conned out of the gullible sheep in the pews.
He's no doubt already siphoned millions front he church into his own accounts one way or another so why not retire early ?
"Religious" leaders are all con artists. If you expect them to be good people that is your failing.
I wonder how many folks he's already "banished to HELL" for doing the same thing?
religion is stupid
